In Antwerp and Brussels: Disaster recovery plant Belgium

Now more than ever, reliable off-site data recovery is essential to a business continuity plan. Many organizations are left vulnerable with their backup and recovery plans because they do not hedge against an on-site disaster. LCL has quality data center space in two cities in the country, and has relationships with numerous providers who can secure your mission-critical assets.

Disaster recovery plan is needed everywhere

Recent world events have changed the way many organizations see Disaster Recovery (DR). No longer reserved for disaster-prone industries or organizations located in high-risk areas, now every Belgian company must include disaster recovery in their long-term contingency plans.

At LCL you can outsource without loosing control

According to Gartner Group, 70% of companies that suffer a major IT disaster without a valid recovery plan, fail within the next year. Of those that do survive, only 10% make a full recovery.

Business continuity and disaster recovery solutions at LCL DR plant

Our business continuity and disaster recovery solutions assure that you always have access to your mission-critical data. LCL offers the physical environment for customers implementing disaster recovery and business continuity methodologies. The recovery solution, which includes permanently installed servers, telecoms connectivity and user seats, can be located in LCL's high-security recovery centre. Working with LCL, a system integrator can prepare and equip the site for speedy recovery of core services and communication capabilities, including connections to several external sites. Other services can included maintenance, insurance, and support for annual testing. In the event of a disaster, a client can immediately start the restoration of data and applications with the assistance of recovery specialists. Total recovery time is 24 hours at most. The site functions in effect as a temporary office, enabling a customer to continue to function in a structured, organised way.

Why choose LCL disaster recovery plant?

As more and more enterprises are discovering, merely having a disaster recovery plan isn't enough. What counts is being able to remain in business - and operating - even in the event of a major disruption to your facilities, environment, or systems. In May 2004 LCL opened a second disaster recovery centre. The setup is designed to mirror customer facilities and therefore provide business continuity on a 24 7 365 basis in the event of a total equipment failure, fire or ‘Act of God’. The centre is fronted by a carrier grade telephone exchange with multiple access lines and fiber connections. High bandwidth Internet connections from different carriers makes it possible for every company to install equipment in the LCL datacenters for disaster recovery purposes. In the event of a total service breakdown at customer’s premises, all telephone and Internet traffic is automatically diverted to LCL disaster recovery centre and the customer’s applications run as normal. Companies can now gain access to Critical Operations Space when they need it. Investing only a monthly fee for the required space is the start. When an organization goes into contingency mode using LCL physical colocation services all of the necessary infrastructure is already in place allowing for full business continuance.

Why is business recovery needed

The term "business recovery" is more frequently used than "disaster recovery" as focus is moved to recovery of entire business processes rather than just recovery of computer systems and network infrastructure. The term "business continuity" is more often used as a synonym for "business recovery", although most properly "business continuity" is even a broader term that covers all technology, people, and processes intended to ensure the continuity of a company's business processes. Business Continuity Mngt: this is not something new and it can happen at any time

Cold - warm - hot site recovery

Base your disaster recovery plan on a 24x7 environment. Use the two LCL colocation centers in your DR plan: the two centers provide secure power and telecommunications possibilities. Hot Site: An online system that can take over immediately if the main system fails or is destroyed (we call these "hot backups"). Cold sites and mobile sites are also used for backup.

Dedicated processing solutions for 'Instant' Failover.

Highly sophisticated enterprises have distributed their IT processing between their own data center and dedicated systems at an LCL 24x7 production data facility. In the event of a major systems failure at the primary site, or the outright loss of the data facility due to fire or other catastrophe, the LCL data center can take over processing tasks in a matter of minutes, with virtually no loss of data integrity. This 'hot standby' approach can be significantly less expensive than maintaining duplicate datacenter facilities, and can also alleviate lost time during transition to 'emergency' conditions. Depending on configuration, companies can instantly recover up to 100% of failed processing capacity. Nothing brings a network to a halt more easily and quickly than physical damage, whether it be from a plane hitting the World Trade Center, massive floods in Spain, or a high-temperature chemical fire on a train passing the Eurotunnel tunnel filled with fiber-optic cables.

Diegem 17 May 2004

LCL has opened a second datacentre for its customers in Antwerp. LCL has come to an agreement with C&W who is stopping its housing and colocation activities. The centre occupies a 477m² surface and is built in a completely redundant way. C&W had invested around 1.2 million Euros in this centre. Thanks to the take over of this centre in Antwerp, LCL has become the largest, independent colocation supplier in Belgium and is the only independent colocation supplier running two centres.

According to LCL's Managing Director, Laurens van Reijen : "For LCL, it represents a real opportunity to be able to assist the existing customers from Antwerp but also to develop new activities. The building, situated around 40 kilometres from the datacentre in Diegem, is perfectly adapted to "Disaster Recovery" and "Business Continuity" services. As the only operator having hooked up datacentres to different electricity suppliers and to different backbones operators, we can supply you with total redundancy. We have observed an increase in requests from the professional market with a view to solutions that ensure continuity for the critical applications and, our two centres allow us to answer these requests without any problem."

The centre can be used as a "hot site" or a "cold site". In the case on a " hot site ", there is a permanent connection between the two mirrored sites (through fibre channel, Escon,...). The alternative site is always ready to take over all the tasks in the case where a problem should occur on the main site. In the " cold site " configuration, certain preventive measures are taken but the alternative site will only become operational in the case of a major problem.

At the moment, LCL is responsible for the physical infrastructure: guaranteed energy and air conditioning supply, safety,…..and allows the companies to outsource without loosing control of their IT environment. The system integrators can take care of the firewalls, spam intercept, IP VPN services, … A partner programme is developed by LCL with these systems integrators.
